Location
165 kilometres north of Sydney, or around two hours drive, the Hunter extends from Lake Macquarie to Port Stephens on the coast and inland to the upper reaches of the Hunter Valley.

The industries of the region are agriculture, aluminium, coal, defence, steel, horses, health, viticulture, winemaking, education, tourism and engineering.

Lake Macquarie, Australia’s largest saltwater lake; houseboats, watersports, fishing and ocean beaches abound.
Hunter Valley Wine Country is renowned for its fine vineyards; the winemaking tradition dates back more than 150 years, with Australia’s most famous wineries sprinkled through the hills near Cessnock. A popular region for food and wine lovers, the area is also full of wonderful guesthouses. Hot air balloon rides and winery tours by horse-drawn carriage or bicycle are also popular.
Maitland and Morpeth are historic river port towns with elegant heritage precincts, rich in colonial history.
Newcastle is Australia’s second oldest city, founded in 1797 as a penal colony. Today it is Australia’s busiest port and home to world champion surfers.
Port Stephens’ white beaches and natural harbour attracts families of dolphins who follow the cruise boats. Other famous residents are the wild koalas at Tilligerry Habitat. Try an exciting off-road adventure over the towering sand dunes to the wild and pristine 32Km Stockton Beach, with its huge shipwreck.
Barrington Tops is the closest World Heritage Listed rainforest to Sydney and one of the highest points in Australia which can be explored on foot, horseback or by 4WD.
The lush, rolling hills of the Upper Hunter present many opportunities for discovering our rural heritage, including rural townships and farm stays. The Scone area also offers excellent wineries and is the biggest horse breeding area in the Southern Hemisphere.
