Bay of Naples

What to see

Beautiful drives along the coast with picnic stops on the beach or lunch in one of the picturesque whitewashed villages or towns such as Sorrento or Postiana. Take a trip to visit to the preserved Roman City of Pompeii and the remains of the town of Herculaneum stopping of the now dormant volcano at Vesuvius. Stroll through the ancient and historical streets of the walled city of Naples. The glorious Isle of Capri is only a short boat trip away.

Working up an appetite

Watersports such as windsurfing and water-skiing can be done at most of the resorts along the coast where you can also arrange to hire canoes or diving equipment. Boat trips and cruises are also very popular especially to Capri so even if you're relaxing on board you'll still build up a healthy appetite with all that fresh sea air.

What to eat & drink

Food and drink plays a huge part of Italians daily life from the first espresso and pastry of the morning to lunch usually the main meal of the day with three courses - pasta or soup, meat and vegetables and dessert. Evening meals tend to be lighter but most restaurants will offer 3 or 4 courses in the evening. Locally made wine is delicious, plentiful and always available.

Where to dance the night away

Naples has a host of clubs, bars and discos some of the clubs have tables outside which can be very pleasant in the summer. Italians usually go out late to eat then to socialise so most of the clubs at the weekends won't be busy until after midnight.

Annual high points

In July the Feast of St Anne is celebrated at Ischia with a torchlight procession of hundreds of boats transformed into floats. Children on horseback dressed as angles can be seen in November in Adelfia in celebration of The Feast of Trifone.

What to bring back

Fine stationery and ceramics from Amalfi. Wonderful tables, trays or pictures with "intarsia" - inlaid wood from Sorrento where you can also find all kinds of luxury goods, good quality leather shoes can be a real bargain. Food and wine also make great gifts and a trip to the local market or delicatessen can be a real treat.
