Alaska

What to see

View the majestic grandeur of the Hubbard Glacier and watch the whales, sea lions, seabirds and other marine life, which inhabit Glacier Bay. Beautiful Kenai Fjords National Park has a spectacular coastline with its long and steep sided glacial coastal fjords. Ketchikan make's an interesting cultural port of call with its display of hand carved totem poles. For more information on Alaska's history visit the fine museums, in Juneau the state capital. Even at night natural wonders can still be seen - Alaska is the best place in USA to view the wonders of the aurora borealis or northern lights.

Working up an appetite

On board, most ships will have a gym and pool so you can keep up with your exercise regime. You may have the chance on a shore excursion, to go hiking in the nearest forests and mountains or along the nearest beach. To get a closer view of the amazing scenery and wildlife take advantage of a guided kayak or canoe trip.

What to eat and drink

The quality and variety of meals on board most ships is first class but make sure you sample the delights of the delicious seafood available in most restaurants on land such as Alaska King Crab. If you get the chance don't miss an invitation or excursion to a Salmon Bake - fresh salmon cooked outdoors on a barbecue. You'll find most well known brands of beer and a few decent local brews on shore.

Annual high points

Events such as pole climbing, power saw bucking, axe throwing and chopping take place on the 4th of July at the Ketchikan Timber Carnival as well as a parade, rubber duck race and evening firework display. The Alaska Folk Festival, a free week long series of concerts takes place in Juneau in June.

What to bring back

Locally smoked salmon and other types of seafood are very popular gifts. There is also a range of Native American and Alaskan arts and crafts available such as wood carvings, hand beaded accessories and silver jewellery.
