A gourmet's tour of northwest France
|
Having rolled off the ferry, Hovercraft or train the options are
endless, from a day spent wandering around the historic city of
Boulogne to a trip further south to the grand squares and colonnades
of Arras. Or alternatively follow the coast stopping along the way
to while away a few hours in a good coastal restaurant.
In Boulogne visit the Nautical & Aquatic Museum, wander around
the old town, exploring the various alleyways and stopping off at
the legendary Philippe Olivier Fromagerie, to take your pick from
over 300 cheeses.
Enjoy a meal at La Grand Cerf, situated halfway between Boulogne
& Calais - indulging in local crab, Foie Gras or Boulonnais lamb
à la badiane - a mouth watering dish containing star anise. If you
have room finish with a selection of wonderful pastries or local
calvados as a digestive.
If you are passing through Boulogne on a Wednesday or Saturday
visit the market, which sells everything from plants and local vegetables
to handmade chocolates and sweets. Also don't miss out on a trip
to a good local wine warehouse to load up your car with wine for
home.

A gourmet's tour of the Loire
|
Between visiting the beautiful chateaux in the region, take time
to explore some of the local vineyards and while away an afternoon
picnicking on the banks of the Loire. Or for something a bit different
spend a day visiting the Troglodyte caves of the Saumurois stopping
off at Les Caves de Marson for a wonderful meal inside a cave.
There are numerous chateaux in the area including the stunning
Chenonceau with its formal gardens and the tranquil Azay le Rideau.
If you enjoy walking why not explore the forest trails surrounding
Chambord or spend a day exploring the city of Nantes.
The region is well known for its venison, from the local chateaux
forests, and for other game such as partridge, rabbit and pigeon.
Also try the local goats cheese - Beignets au Fromage du Chevre
make a wonderful mid-morning snack.
Buy a few wines direct from the local vineyards and load up with
produce from the weekly markets - vegetables, herbs and cheeses.
