Greece & Islands
|
A flavour of the some of the main
islands:
|
Mykonos
Great beaches and fantastic nightlife (both straight & gay), historically
renowned for attracting the jet-set. Short boat ride away from Delos,
which is now an outdoor archaeological museum.
Santorini
Dramatic scenery makes the volcanic Isle of Santorini a favourite
for both cruise ships and Honeymooners alike. Beaches of black volcanic
sand abound.
Corfu
A mixture of resort hotels, and quaint mountain villages. Tourism
is here to stay, but you can still escape it on parts of the island.
Rhodes
Still has the air of a high-class resort, with its wonderful Venetian
influences and architecture.
Kos
The young party island, where people with endless energy and capacity
to party, boogie the nights away.
Crete
This large island has a wonderful combination of scenery from gorges
to mountain ranges. It also boasts great beaches and in terms of
an all in holiday destination - something for everyone.
Greece was the heart of a magnificent cultural civilisation from
2000 to 500 BC - as well as being the playground for the Gods of
Greek mythology. Both mainland and islands still have wonderful
ruins and it is worth hiring a car to explore.
In particular
If you are stopping over in Athens, a visit to The Acropolis to
see the Parthenon & Erechtheion temples is a must. As are trips
to the Venetian Herakleon on Crete, the birthplace of the Olympic
games at Olympia and the Old Town at Rhodes.
Sun, sea & sand are the main attractions for children and the variety
of watersports keeps most well occupied. However, many islands have
attractions away from the shore, including the Miniature Pony Centre
at Skyros, the Knight's Castle on Kos, and the village of Olimbas
on Karpathos, where even the children wear traditional costumes.
Greece is a mecca for sailors and watersport lovers alike, with
particularly good windsurfing and waterskiing schools on Chios,
Lesvos and Skiathos. Keen walkers head for Tinos & Paros, Chios
& Lesvos.
Avoid the tavernas catering for tourists and follow the locals
to get a real taste of Greece. Specialities include Taramosalata,
Souvlaki (Kebabs), Keftedes (meatballs) or a variety of fresh fish.
The local wine is retsina (with its distinctive pine-resin taste)
and ouzo will give you a hangover to remember!
Everything from leather goods to traditional handicrafts. Stylish
replicas of Byzantine art are also available from museum shops and
monasteries.
