In the imperial city of Marrakech, view the lively street life
in the old town square - Djema el-Fna then stroll around its architectural
wonders such as the Koutoubia Mosque. Travel to the High Atlas Mountains
and the coloured cliffs and rock formations of the of Dadès Gorge.
Experience the magic of the Saharan dunes and the vast desert sky
at Merzouga.
Children will be spoiled by the locals and enjoy the lively towns
and cities . After the excitement of Marrakech the lovely quiet
seaside spot of Oualidia is a great place to take the kids and relax
for a few days with safe swimming in the lagoon.
The country has some spectacular trekking and climbing, the Touubkal
region covers some of the highest peaks of the Atlas range, while
Jebel Sarho takes in more rugged scenery in the volcanic blue-black
mountains. To the North the Rif mountains will give you wonderful
views of the Mediterranean coast.
Try some of the popular traditional dishes, harira is a thick soup
made with chickpeas, lentils and haricot beans flavoured with lemon
and chicken or mutton. The spicy slowly simmered stew , tagine is
served with couscous and for dessert or a snack, cornes de gazelle
wonderful croissant style pastry filled with honey and almonds are
delicious. Sweet and distinctive mint tea is served everywhere including
any shop you enter where you will be expected to drink three glasses
before you leave.
In June the National Folklore Festival runs for over 10 days in
Marrakech and is a colourful affair with dancers musicians and other
entertainers from all over the country, also in June the Moussem
at Goulimime although a religious celebration also has a large camel
market.
Babouches the brightly coloured leather slippers and are still
commonly worn, for trying out some authentic dishes at home a Fés
pottery tajine - casserole dish, would be a good buy. There is also
a beautiful range of jewellery from wonderful beads to delicate
filigree and a huge variety of unusual carpets and textiles.
