Ski Choices & Alternatives
As skiing continues to increase in popularity the choice of different
destinations grows - Many people are trying out alternatives destinations
to Western Europe including North America, Eastern Europe and even
places like Chile or New Zealand. In addition, many people have
abandoned 2 skis for a snowboard and most resorts now have as many
snow boarders as skiers!

Cross Country Skiing in New England
|
Cross-country skiing is a great way of exploring an area and allows
you to get away from the crowds and enjoy the local scenery and
wildlife. New England is particularly beautiful in wintertime and
there are numerous skiving options to choose from including ski
touring from inn to inn in Vermont, coastal skiving in Maine and
moonlight ski tours in Connecticut.
Combine skiving with a trip to Boston to take in the city highlights
or tour around Woodstock and the other old-style towns that make
the area so quaint. Whilst on the cross-country trails arm yourself
with a good wildlife guide and see what you can spot along the way.
Many resorts around New England cater for downhill skiving as well
as cross-country, so one option is that the kids go off and bomb
up and down mountains, whilst you explore the trails below. Alternatively,
other winter activities include ice-skating, curling and sleigh
rides as well as normal resort facilities.
Having worked up an appetite by day, you should be in the position
to indulge in the evening and enjoy hearty cuisine such as t-bone
steaks, delicious stews and casseroles and other New England favourites.
The breakfasts are also not to be missed with choices ranging from
hash browns to blueberry muffins to maple pancakes.

Mogul skiing and Snow boarding in
Switzerland
|
The rugged slopes of the Swiss Alps are the perfect place to perfect
your mogul technique or develop your acrobatic skills on your snow
board. Some of the most challenging slopes in the world are to be
found in the region and because of its central location there are
also opportunities to ski across into Italy or tour around and spend
a few days in France.
Many of the resorts have a wonderful village atmosphere that includes
cosy bars and inns, horse drawn carriages and traditional wooden
chalets. In addition, most have a flood-lit ice rinks, where you
can practice your ice-skating skills or watch the local ice hockey
club. Beyond the resort, why not take a day's break and drive to
the nearest city/town - many ski resorts are located within 2 hours
of either Geneva, Bern or Zurich and all are worth a visit. What
to do with the kids
Most resorts have very comprehensive child care and starter classes
for even young kids, that allow adults to have a bit of free-ski
time to themselves. Other activities include sledging and ice skating.
Raclette and fondue are the most famous Swiss specialities and
these come in a variety of forms all containing copious quantities
of cheese. In addition, Swiss chocolate is world famous and they
have even created a Chocolate fondue, which should keep even the
most hardened choc-o-holic happy. There are a variety of good Swiss
wines include Fendant & Dole wines and they are usually better value
than other European or New World alternatives.
Zermatt - for horse-drawn carriages, village atmosphere and magnificent
views of the Matterhorn.
St Moritz - to rub shoulders with the rich and famous.
Verbier - For tough black mogul runs and enjoying the apres ski
as much as the skiving.
Alternatively, try out a ski touring package, which includes a
few days stay in a variety of different resorts.
