South Korea

What to see

The Royal Places and museums in Seoul are a great place to give you an insight into the history and culture of the country. In the southeast, Kyongju has a wealth of amazing historical sights. The mountain scenery is breathtaking and in particular in and around the Soraksan and Naejangsan National Parks.

What to do with the kids

In Seoul the Children's Grand Park has plenty of space for kids to play and has rides and even a small zoo to keep them entertained. Take a boat trip around or to some of hundreds of beautiful islands that make up the Tadohae Haesang National Park.

Working up an appetite

The country has fantastic hiking and climbing opportunities and in winter you can even ski. After a strenuous day in the mountains, spend a few hours relaxing in the Hot Springs. Koreans are very keen on bowling and billiards and you'll find alleys and clubs almost everywhere - it can be great fun and a great way to meet the locals.

What to eat & drink

A favourite dish with foreigners is delicious Pulgogi - strips of beef marinated in soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic and chilli which you cook yourself on a hot plate at your table. Also worth trying are some of the soup-based dishes such as Shinsollo with meat, vegetables and fish with bean curd cooked in a broth. Koreans love whisky and vodka and have their own local brews, which certainly are different.

Where to dance the night away

Discos are found in the main at the larger hotels and in the major cities and equally popular with the locals are karaoke bars. If you don't feel your singing is up to much there are lots of bars and restaurants to spend an evening in especially in Seoul.

Annual high points

The National Folk Arts Festival usually held in September is a great way to see traditional events such as torch hurling and other crowd pulling activities. Buddha's Birthday is celebrated with an evening lantern parade in Seoul and Popchusa.

What to bring back

One of the countries main exports is sports equipment and you can find some great bargains. Beautiful traditional lacquer ware boxes are popular gifts and you can find some wonderful precious and semiprecious stones.
