A visit to Sydney is a quintessential Australian experience.
Australia's oldest city has a population of just over 4 million and perches on the east coast of Australia, enjoying average maximum temperatures around
17 Celsius in winter (June - August) and 27 Celsius in summer (December - February).
Blue skies, golden sands and a surf beach are what most Australians associate with relaxing. Around eighty per cent of the Australian population lives on or near the coast. Those who live inland usually choose to take their annual holiday on the coast.
Sydney alone boasts 40 surf beaches, as well as its glittering Harbour, and some 200,000 Sydney residents own registered boats.
It is a rare Australian who doesn't swim, and public education campaigns focus each summer on pool and beach safety and sun protection. It is
important that visitors swim on beaches that are patrolled by lifeguards and always swim between the red and yellow flags.
Australia's Surf Lifesaving Association is one of the world's largest volunteer organisations. It attracts all ages; the seven-year-old 'nippers'
who train at most beaches on Sunday mornings will eventually join the ranks of Australia's legendary surf lifesavers.
The mild climate encourages a casual, outdoor lifestyle. Sydneysiders frequently eat outdoors, whether at home, at the Great Aussie Barbecue, or in a restaurant. They are a nation of food lovers and multi-cultural Sydney is an exciting mix of international cuisines, all enjoyed with equal gusto.
In keeping with their love of the outdoors, Australians are among the world's top mobile phone users. A quarter of all homes and almost eighty per cent of businesses have mobile phones. They are famed for their enthusiasm for new technology but pay television has not taken off they are happily dedicated to free-to-air TV. On the other hand, Internet use in Australian homes increased by 49 per cent between February 1998 and February 1999 to almost 1.3 million households.
Education standards are amongst the best in the world and Sydney is home to five universities: Sydney, New South Wales, Macquarie, Western Sydney and
the University of Technology
