The Rockies - USA
Sprawling across five states - Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Utah and
Wyoming, few areas of the U.S. can offer such a range of outdoor
activities and miles of wilderness and breathtaking scenery to enjoy
in places like, Yellowstone National Park. In winter the Rockies
boast some of the best snow and skiing in the world. Cities like
Salt Lake City and Denver are full of great restaurants and shopping
opportunities; even smaller towns such as Jackson or Boulder are
surprisingly cosmopolitan. If you're interested in history you can
visit such legendary places as Little Bighorn where General Custer
made his "last stand".
Cowboys and Indians, wildlife, skiing, horse riding, hiking, camping,
rodeos, mountain biking, dinosaur fossils all this and more can
be seen and experienced in the wide open spaces and fresh air of
the Rockies.
If you don't feel like keeping up with the kids there are some
more leisurely pursuits such as fishing or sailing around the lakes.
In the towns and cities there are lots of fine museums and galleries
or if your driving just sit back, relax and enjoy the passing picture
postcard scenes.
After all that activity - everyone will look forward to the great
cafés and restaurants which dish up a selection of hearty American
food with regional favourites such as steak, buffalo, pheasant and
fish often served in rustic settings and with fantastic views.
In December, Denver has a Festival of Lights a parade, which ends
with what is said to be the world's largest Christmas lighting display.
In summertime one of Aspen's biggest attractions is the Aspen Music
festival - from Chamber Music to modern jazz there is something
for everyone.
There are lots of beautiful photography books; posters and postcards
available if you think your camera might not captured the big skies
and scale of the Rockies. Or if you're hooked on becoming a cowboy
a pair of boots might help you on your way.
