The Virgin Islands

What to see

Each of the Virgin Islands has a selection of sights to visit and it is worth spending a few days exploring the different islands. Try visiting Blackbeard's Castle, the Synagogue of Beracha and one of the many traditional Plantation houses. Slightly offshore the island of Virgin Gorda, has some amazing sea grottoes and further out again anyone into wreck diving will find some amazing diving sites to explore.

What to do with the kids

These islands are really a place for rest and relaxation, however, if the kids get bored of the beach there is plenty on offer including: Coral World Marine Park and Mountain Top on St Thomas, St Croix Aquarium and Buck Island Reef National Monument near St Croix.

Working up an appetite

Water sports are the main active pastime - from scuba diving and snorkeling to windsurfing and sailing. Also it has been said that lying on the beach and absorbing the sun's rays is a strenuous activity in itself!

What to eat & drink

As with the rest of the Caribbean, the Virgin islands have wonderful fresh fish, exotic fruit and a variety of local island dishes including johnny cake and goats water. Restaurant food is good but not that cheap. Plus the islands have not escaped the arrival of American chains such as Kentucky Fried Chicken and the ubiquitous McDonalds.

Where to dance the night away

There are lively spots to be found on all of the main islands, including Bomba's Surfside Shack on Tortola and the Blue Moon at St Croix. Most of the islands have good local bands that play a mixture of reggae and jazz.

Annual high points

St Croix Blues & Heritage festival in late January, St Thomas' carnival week around Easter time.

What to bring back

A carved Calabash bowl or some local spices, hot sauces and tropical jams. St Thomas' also has a famous doll maker and the islands are have streets of jewellery shops - women's heaven and man's hell!!
