Touring Andalucia
Andalucia with Spain's highest mountains and miles of beautiful
coastline makes the area a wonderful place to travel around and
has some of the most surprisingly beautiful, interesting and lively
cities and towns in Spain. Stroll around charming Seville, with
its wonderful Moorish architecture and ancient palaces and monuments.
As you travel around look out for the small travelling Spanish
circus's which tend to follow a trail around the major festivals
in the region which can be an added attraction to the parades for
children. Of course the coast offers long stretches of wonderful
beaches and all kinds of watersports.
Well kitted out hikers and mountaineers should head for the Sierra
Nevada where you can also ski in winter. Golf is very popular especially
around the Costa Del Sol. Tarifa on the most southern point of Spain
is where to go if you want to test out your windsurfing skills.
As an apéritif in Seville sip a fino sherry with some local manzanflia
green olives, as a starter in Córdoba try the local gazpacho salmoreja
and a glass of Rioja blanco, seafood in Malaga is a must for a main
course try pescado al horno washed down with a sparkling glass of
Cava and to round off a meal Grenada has some wonderful sweetmeats
to accompany a strong solo grande coffee.

Where to dance the night away

On the Costa del Sol there are lots of nightclubs around the main
resorts such as Torremolinos and Marbella perhaps the best being
around Puerto Banús's lively yacht harbour. The cities of Grenada
and Seville are better known for their bars, a very pleasant evening
can be spent while you sample some local snacks and drinks at a
tapas bar and watch the world go by.
At Easter Semanta Santa or Holy Week is a huge event throughout
the region and is celebrated with over 100 processions in Seville,
and on a smaller scale in Grenada and Malaga. The third week in
May sees the Alhauríin de la Torre in Malaga with lots of flamboyant
flamenco this festival also has an unusual parade through the streets
with giant figures.
To remind you of the wonderful colours of the region the painted
and glazed ceramic pottery, plates and tiles are a great buy. In
Seville a delicately embroidered shawl known as a mantilla, or some
intricate filigree jewellery from Córdoba would make a romantic
gift.
