Washington DC
This is a great place to find out about American history with a
tour around its monuments and wonderful museums and galleries. In
particular the inspiring Lincoln Memorial, the National Museum of
American History and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
are recommended.
Of course you may even catch a glimpse of the President
between Capitol Hill and the White House.
The city has almost every type of museum imaginable and many are
designed for children from the National Air and Space Museum where
you can touch a rock from the moon and they will want to spend hours
in the Capital's Children's Museum with its hands on displays and
experiments. Apart from the view most kids love the trip in the
lift to the top of the Washington Monument.
Hire a bike and follow some of the trails in and around the area
or if you're a sailor take a day trip to Annapolis about a hour's
drive from the city. Washington residents are generally fitness
fanatics and you'll see lots of joggers around and you'll never
find a problem finding a local gym or swimming pool to keep up with
your own fitness regime.
French, Italian and Chinese restaurants are popular here but it
also has restaurants serving food from places like Brazil and Senegal.
Worth looking out for are some US specialities such as Maryland
crab cakes or Carolina shrimps.

Where to dance the night away
|
The city has a good range of nightclubs with hip and happening
places for the trendy to swanky dance clubs and bars frequented
by the diplomats and politicians. There are also great comedy clubs
and music venues, check with hotel or local press to find out more
details.
Independence Day is celebrated in style here on the 4th of July,
with grand parades, concerts and fireworks. In mid December the
President lights the tree to mark the beginning of the Pageant of
Peace with music and caroling.
As in most major US cities, you'll be able to find almost anything
from crafts to designer wear to buy. Clothing and accessories are
very good value and trip to one the malls, department stores or
out of town discount centres is well worth it if your looking for
bargains.
