Cancun - Mexico Holiday Review

Submitted by: Sam - Ilkley
Date: June 2002

Cancun in Mexico for me has always been a holiday destination to aspire to. With long golden sandy beaches and Caribbean weather it's the ultimate place to relax in a paradise setting, and so when venturing out there in May of 1999, I had high expectations.

My partner and I flew out with Unijet holidays, travelling with Air2000.The holiday was a last minute bargain and one which to be honest we thought we'd never be able to afford. We were staying at the El Pueblito hotel which is a 3* accommodation on an all-inclusive basis. Although not as magnificent as some of the hotels in Cancun, the El Pueblito has a traditional Mexican feel with the buildings being made to look like a small Mexican village.

The first night we arrived it was pretty dark and so we couldn't really see much. But the hotel was really friendly and welcoming and the room consisted of two double beds, a colour TV. With in-house movies, air conditioned rooms and sea view with a lovely little terrace.

We ventured upon arrival to the hotel bar down by the pool, which was having one of its barbecue nights .The pool was just by the beach and was alight with pretty coloured bulbs surrounding the pool area. The barbecue was fantastic and being on an all-inclusive basis meant that we could eat and drink as much as we liked, although some took more advantage of this than others!

The following day we decided to check out the beach, which was for the most part exactly what I had expected, long white sandy beaches, clear blue sea and the ultimate picture postcard. There were also plenty of water sports available, everything from jet skiing to paragliding.

That night we decided to explore a night out in the resort. Cancun itself is a purpose built resort and is very americanised in the aspect of shopping malls and it's buildings. Cancun is quite well spaced out and a lot of the hotels can be as much as 6km from downtown Cancun, which although does sound quite a lot, there is compensation for this. The main bus service, which stops outside every hotel on the way to downtown Cancun is best bus service I have ever come across, it literally comes every minute and is around just 25p to travel on each way.

Upon arrival in the downtown area, whichis extremely safe and easy to get around there is an abundance of shops, bars and restaurants. There is also and amazing array of nightclubs, which if you are up for it are well worth exploring as they are nothing that you will find in the UK. One nightclub that we decided to go to called CoCo Bongos actually had a trapeze artist right in the middle of the club, and was bigger than anything I had ever experienced.

We also decided on night to try out a couple of bars, which provided their own entertainment as did most of the bars and were of reasonable price with regards to drinks and eating out. But most of the time we spent at the hotel because of the all-inclusive option.

There were day trips to be had and with hindsight I wished we had done. There was an option to swim with Dolphins, you could also go and visit the Mayans ruins such as Chichen Itza, which provides a look into the real Mexican culture.

But overall Cancun provides something for everyone, there's the nightlife there, although if you were going on this sort of holiday I would suggest you go self catering or room only, as all-inclusive would probably be a waste of money. But the beaches are spectacular and provide the perfect base for relaxation; with the odd day trip thrown in for culture it's the perfect balance.
