Spain - Fuengirola Holiday Review

My partner and I took a holiday in September 2004 to the Costa Del Sol.
We flew into Malaga airport which is very nice and well air conditioned. We took a taxi from there to Fuengirola which took about 20 minutes and was quite cheap, we paid about £12.00 one way compared to a private transfer booked in the UK, you can pay up to £70.00 return.
We stayed in the resort of Fuengirola which is a busy resort with a great sandy beach, great for kids, loads of bars and restaurants, a few nightclubs as well, but was a bit too busy for me, a bit like Blackpool in July.
We stayed at the Veramar Apartments which looked lovely in the brochure, own pool and bar/ restaurant.
The apartments were clean and tidy, the pool area was full of locals taking over and the bar was always full of them as well. We felt a bit intimidated by the end of the holiday.
The brochure said a 5 minute walk to the beach and restaurants, its the longest 5 minute walk that I have ever been on, it was more like a 10-15 minute walk through a residential area to get to the beach, not ideal if you have small children.
Once we got settled we wandered around to find the local supermarket to purchase some shopping as we had gone self catering, we got what we needed (pretty reasonable prices especially the local beer San Miguel) and headed back to the apartments.
Little did we know that we were in the heart of the local residential area which didn't bother us much at first, but a few days in to the trip we were getting sick of being stared at all the time by the locals like we shouldn't be there or something.
So we carried on and just avoided staying round the apartments and found some much better accommodation on the beach front where there are some lovely hotels. One in particular looked lovely, it was the Fuengirola Beach hotel.
I suppose we can't really complain we only paid £98.00 each for 8 nights at these apartments as we had won our flight tickets on a local radio station.
The resort overall was nice and was great for cheap perfumes, cigs, alcohol and handbags of which I purchased quite a few.
A good choice of eateries including McDonalds, Their own version on KFC and loads of cafes which catered for the most fussiest type of person from english snacks and meals to the local tapas and fish restaurants.
The transport system is quite good as well in the centre of Fuengirola. You can go by local train to the airport, Benalmedina, Nerja, Marbella, and Torremolinos.
We visited Fuengirola's own Zoo which was only 10minutes walk from our apartments, it was a great experience it took about 1/2 a day to go around (you pay approx £5.00 to get in) with a fantastic array of animals. We even saw a show of exotic birds handled by one of the inn keepers which was fantastic and got loads of photos.
The holiday overall was good and we would definitely go back, but maybe to a different accommodation, something a bit more central.
