The Mexican government has revealed that tourism increased by ten per cent in 2004. Rodolfo Elizondo, the Mexican tourism secretary, said that 20.6 million people visited Mexico during 2004. Mr Elizondo went onto say that tourists provided a £5.73 billion boost to the Mexican economy.
Mexico offers a range of attractions: visitors can take an eco-tour in the Yucatan peninsula, kayak off the Baja coast or even do a spot of whale watching in Puerto Vallarta. These are in addition to the ever popular beach holidays in Mexico.
A total of 66,000 new jobs have been created in the Mexican tourism industry as a result of the increased visitor numbers and people who work in the industry can earn around 33 per cent more than the national average.
