Australian tour operators are gearing up for what is predicted to be the country's best tourist season to date.
Many hotels and tours throughout the country's northern territory are already booked out for the peak winter months and about 837,700 passengers have passed through Darwin airport since July - up from 146,000 a year ago.
Darwin's Lord Mayor Peter Adamson told Northern Territory News: "This dry season is shaping up to be one of the best ever."
Experts put most of the boost down to international security concerns keeping many Australians close to home, but also credit a busy antipodean sports calendar.
The Darwin Cup, The Tattersall's Finke Desert Race and New Zealand's Arafura Games are all predicted to increase visitor numbers.
Tony Clementson, manager of Northern Territory operator Tourism Top End, said: "We also expect a great drive market because of world situations and people exploring Australia by road."
