Florida has a wealth of attractions for the tourist to visit. The best known attractions are the Orlando theme parks and the Everglades but Florida has much more to offer. Here are just a few of the more quirky tourist sights that may interest you.
Billie Swamp Safari
Explore the wetlands of the Seminole Tribe's Big Cyprus Reservation in south west Florida onboard a motorised swamp buggy. Deep water buffaloes, bison, hogs, eagles and alligators are among the wildlife to be spotted around Lake Okeechobee. Tours cost $22 for adults and $12 for children.
Check out the Billie Swamp Safari web site for more information.
Drive-in Cinemas
Recall the days of jukeboxes, roller-skates and poodle skirts at Florida's drive in cinemas. The Thunderbird in Fort Lauderdale is the largest in the US and, as well as a movie screen it incorporates a flea market and circus. It is nicknamed the Swap Shop Drive-In. For something more intimate, try Dade City's cosy Joy Lan, which still looks the way it did in the 1940's. The Fun Lan in Hillsborough County offers discounted rates every Thursday, when a car full of people can gain admission for only $3.50.
Silver Springs
Florida may be better known for its beaches, but it also boasts 27 major freshwater springs - more than any other state in the US. The largest system is at Silver Springs, near Ocala, which has developed into a 350-acre nature theme park with glass bottom boat rides, alligator encounters, four wheel-drive safaris, petting zoos and reptile shows. Admission starts at $33 for adults and $24 for children.
Oyster Fishing
Put the champagne on ice and learn how to harvest oysters on the coast of the Florida Panhandle. More than 90% of Florida's oysters originate from the town of Apalachicola. A half day boat trip with an experienced oysterman costa about $250 for four people. Passengers are permitted to catch up to 6.5lbs of oysters each.
Other wacky events in Florida include the annual Underwater Music Festival staged on Big Pine Key and Sopchoppy's Worm Gruntin' Festival, where competitors use a traditional method to coax earthworms to the surface! Ernest Hemmingway fans can head to Key West in July for the annual Sloppy Joe's Look-Alike contest.
