More than a quarter of Britons choose their travel destination if they have seen it on TV or in a movie, new research has revealed.
The phenomenon has been labelled "set-jetting", and has led to some tourist locations reporting a 30 per cent rise in bookings.
Halifax Travel Insurance found that destinations such as New Zealand (Lord of the Rings), Thailand (The Beach) and Greece's Kefalonia (Captain Corelli's Mandolin) all attracted more visitors.
More locally, Alnwick Castle in Northumberland (Harry Potter films), the Yorkshire Dales (Calendar Girls) and Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland (The Da Vinci Code) have also proved popular.
Halifax Travel Insurance's David Rochester commented: "We've definitely noticed the emergence of the set-jetter in recent years.
"I think set-jetting may be part of a broader trend. We have more access to celebrities than ever before and I think that is reflected in a growing desire to visit the parts of the world they make famous."
