A charming mishmash of 50s Americana and Spanish Caribbean heat, Puerto Rico sizzles off the coast of mainland USA and is quickly becoming a favourite off-the-beaten-track destination for travellers with the exotic eye.

At the heart of Puerto Rico's colonial heritage is the city of Ponce. It's a real visual treat, with almost half a billion dollars having been spent on its upkeep over the last few years. Its 17th century architecture, old plazas and churches boast curves to make even J-Lo jealous, and will scintillate the history buff or casual sightseer alike.
