As more people take the herbal path to a healthy life, spa holidays in India and Sri Lanka are becoming popular. Here are a few ideas and information on the places to go.

Heritage Village Club, Goa is on Arossim Beach and facilities include an ayurvedic health centre, swimming pool and lawn tennis.
Ananda Resort - this Himalayan resort overlooks the river Ganges and claims to house India's only Aveda Beauty Institute. It offers an outdoor pool, squash court and activities such as rafting, trekking and safaris.
Somatheeram Ayurvedic Beach Resort is close to Kovalam Beach. As well as yoga and meditation it features an ayurvedic menu with 250 dishes.
Eden Resort & Spa in Beruwela, Sri Lanka is a modern three storey property with landscaped gardens with pools and mini waterfalls.
Glossary of ayurvedic treatments:
Abhyanga - a whole body massage performed by two therapists using a specific herbal oil. It is followed by a steam bath and hot shower.
Pizhichil - consists of lukewarm herbal oils applied by a slow and light massage which purifies different body systems.
Vashpa sweda is a herbal steam bath with as many as 6 fresh herbs and 12 dried herbs boiled to produce steam. It opens the capillaries to induce sweating and flush out waste matter.
Njavarakizha - is a warm oil massage followed by heated herbal-rice bag for relaxation, pain relief and the stimulation of blood circulation.
Tarpana - is an eye bath where medicated ghee retained in a resevoir is placed over the eyes with black gram powder. It helps relieve irration and stress.
Sirodhara - is where a lukewarm herbal oil is poured in a continuous stream on to the forehead. Relieves stress and strain related problems.
Gandusa - involves the retention of medicated oil in the mouth for several minutes. Brings a glow to the face, improves lines and wrinkles and tones the skin.
Nasya - the face, shoulders and chest are massaged with aherbal oil and made to perspire.
