One of the most relaxing ways to travel to France is on the Eurostar from London's Waterloo or Ashford in Kent. Destinations include Paris, Lille, Avignon in the summer, and the Alps during the winter. Upgrading to Eurostar's first class carriages is an affordable and worthwhile option.
PARIS
Whether you want romance, culture or just good Fench food, Paris has plenty to offer in terms of gourmet cuisine. Luxury properties in the French capital include the Ritz Paris, Royal Monceau, Four Seasons and the recently opened Park Hyatt Paris-Vendome. Many tour operators can also offer private taxi transfers to your hotel from either Gare du Nord or Charles de Gaulle airport.
As far as dining is concerned Paris has many fantastic gourmet choices. A prestigious new dining option is La Table du Lancaster at the hotel Lancaster. The menu has been conceived by Michael Troisgros, who runs La Maison Troisgros in Roanne, near Lyons, which has maintained three Michelin stars for the last 34 years. Dishes include marinated sea scallop melba with wakane and char grilled lamb cutlets marinated in lassi. The cities legendary cabarets, including the Moulin Rouge, Paradis Latin and Lido de Paris also offer gourmet menus giving guests the chance to sip fine champagne and sample caviar while they enjoy the show.
COUNTRY LIVING
In recent years there has been a surge in demand for villas, cottages, chateaux and farmhouses in France. The most in demand regions for villa holidays include Provence, the Cote d'Azur, the Alps, the Dordogne and around Bordeaux and Biarritz.
BY THE BEACH
The French Riviera is known for swish resorts such as Cannes, Nice, St Tropez and Monte Carlo. Cannes may be flooded with celebrities every May for the film festival, but it is a stylish destination to visit year round. Nice, the bustling capital of the Cote d'Azur, is famed for its shops, pavement bars and restaurants. Even more upmarket and glamorous is Monte Carlo, which includes among its charms Prince Rainer's landmark palace on the rock of Monaco, the annual motor racing Grand Prix in May, and one of the world's most famous casinos. A new luxury option in Monte Carlo is the five-star Port Palace, which has 50 suites and studios - all with views across the harbour. Its two cellars stock more than 20,000 bottles of wine.
