A popular town in Tuscany is looking at ways to limit the number of tourists that descend in bus-loads during the summer months.
San Gimignano is a picturesque hill-top town which, with its medieval buildings and celebrated art collections, attracts around three million tourists every year.
However, the locals are uncertain that such a high level of mass tourism is a good thing, especially as the historic centre only measures 900 x 500 metres.
Daniele Cappellini, transport spokesman for the local council, told the Guardian: "We have to think of some way to manage this torrent of people and to protect San Gimignano, which is a small and delicate place."
The council plans to offer incentives to winter visitors, such as discounts on museum and gallery tickets, to encourage holiday-makers to visit during the off-peak season.
In addition, they hope to attract a more discerning type of visitor, as local craftsmen feel that their traditional creations are being pushed aside in favour of cheap, tacky replicas.
