Beach, history and adventure on 'simply unforgettable' Lesvos

The third largest Greek Island, Lesvos is spacious enough to satisfy just about every tourist's needs. Whether you are looking for a fast-paced holiday with energy-packed nightlife or a quiet, relaxing vacation on the beach, the island is the perfect place to escape the reality of everyday life.

Situated in the north-eastern portion of the Aegean Sea, Lesvos has a history that stretches back for around 3,000 years. Its historic legacy is very much visible throughout much of the island and no visitor should return home without taking a look at some of the archaeological remains that are dotted over the landscape, if only to take home some picturesque holiday snaps.

The island's capital, Mytilini, has grown up around the city's Byzantine Castle. With impressive views of the city, the castle is one of the largest in the eastern Mediterranean and has been used by the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians and Turks. Nowadays, it is used for cultural
events during the summer months.

While you are in the capital, it is also worthwhile visiting the ancient Hellenistic theatre, which is also located to the north of the town. The theatre was able to accommodate 15,000 spectators, making it one of the
largest in Greece, and inspired Pompei to demand a similar one to be built in Rome after he had visited.

Also in and around Mytilini is a fascinating archaeological museum and a number of important churches, as well as a second century roman aqueduct which lies not far from the nearby town of Moria. Of course, the city
also has plenty to offer of a non-historic nature. The main street has a variety of interesting shops and the waterfront of the old harbour has numerous small cafes and taverns in which to relax.

A surprisingly large amount of Lesvos is unspoiled and it is definitely worth taking part in some sporting or adventure activities while you are there to give you the opportunity to see some of its hidden beauty. The
mild Mediterranean climate certainly lends itself to outdoor activities and there is plenty to get involved in if you get tired of the beach and the island's history.

Walking, cycling and scuba diving are some of the more established excursions and activities on offer on Lesvos and, in recent years, companies have started to offer more adventurous activities such as rock climbing and kayaking.

Lesvos benefits from a wide variety of accommodation, catering for the needs of all travellers. Whether you are looking for a self-catering apartment, a guesthouse or a luxury hotel, you are bound to find an exact match on the island and the warm hospitality of the locals will put you at ease.

And in terms of food, you will be spoilt for choice, as the island has a reputation for having some of the best cooking in Greece. Lesvos is blessed with both an abundance of fish in its seas and fertile land that
produces fresh and nutritious plants and livestock. So you need have no concerns over the standard of the food. We recommend you try the deep-fried zucchini flowers stuffed with cheese and, of course, the fresh seafood, including clams, octopus and squid.

The combination of friendly natives, fabulous weather and equally fine food will make your holiday on Lesvos a simply unforgettable experience, whether you plan on spending it on the beach or half-way up a cliff face. Just don't forget to pack your sun lotion!
