The South African tourism industry is enjoying record visitor numbers, as an increasing number of adventurous holidaymakers seek to find locations which are out-of-the-ordinary.
Around 7.4 million tourists visited the country last year, representing a ten per cent increase since 2004, and the number is set to soar after 2010 when, as host nation of the football World Cup, South Africa will receive massive global exposure.
Speaking at the opening of a recent convention in Durban, deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka described tourism as "our gold".
"Our quest is to reach out to all potential customers," he said.
"Our growth plans are aimed at building a market among young travellers needing affordable packages, young adults and families, business travellers and the upmarket clientele which needs to be spoilt with dream holidays, with exclusive packages that are simply unforgettable and only found in South Africa."
Dream holidays are something which South Africa can provide in abundance. The country's main tourism magnet is Cape Town, which is grand, beautiful and set in one of the world's most breathtaking settings, boasting the striking Table Mountain as its backdrop.
The country also has the famous Kruger National Park, whose amazing range of wildlife never fails to impress. Inhabited by lions, leopards, rhinos and elephants, the park is superbly maintained and, like the rest of South Africa, can be visited on a reasonably slim budget.
