Barcelona - A Spanish microcosm

Barcelona is a fascinating city for a weekend break and can serve as a base from which tourists can explore other parts of Spain. As one of Europe's cultural centres, the city has a whole host of attractions and history to indulge in and set on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea,
the golden sands of the country's beaches are not far away.

All travellers to Barcelona must take a trip along Las Ramblas boulevard, famed for its churches, squares and plazas, which not only provides the ambient stroller with an insight into the heart of the city, but also takes you there, along a two kilometre promenade. Lined with stalls restaurants, bar and street performers, Las Ramblas is just
the beginning of Barcelona's cultural offerings.

The Picasso museum displays over 3,500 of the young artists' work revealing his intimate relationship with the city that was moulded during his youth and flourished in his adult life continuing until his death.

Visitors can also explore the city's connection with art through museums devoted to Salvador Dali and Joan Miro.

No visit to Barcelona is complete without the guided tour of the Nou Camp, Barcelona's football stadium, which is the biggest in Europe holding almost 100,000 fans. The atmosphere on match days is highly charged with regional pride at stake every week, none more so than when
arch rivals Real Madrid come to compete. The team is the best in Europe at present winning the Champions League and the Spanish Primera Liga last year. The club hosts some of the world's biggest names in football including Brazilian Ronaldinho, currently regarded as the world's best player.

Compared to other major European cities, Barcelona is relatively small, with a resident population of only one and a half million, but is able to accommodate three million tourists who set upon the city every year.

With such a manageable size, getting around Barcelona is not a problem thanks to the metro system. Bikes are readily available to hire for those who wish to fly through the city's buzzing streets and stunning
architecture without the hassle of numerous traffic jams.

Travelling from the Catalan capital is not a problem as there are ferry services to the lively Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Majorca and Menorca and the city's main train station, Estacio Sants, provides direct overnight trains to Paris, Geneva, Lisbon and Milan as well as cities
across Spain.

As the commercial centre of the Costa Brava, Barcelona provides easy access to Spain's most northerly Mediterranean seafront and just down the coast is the Costa Dorada, which is named the Coast of Gold, for its stunning beaches.
