Woody Allen says his latest film will be his own homage to Catalonia and its stars are certainly enjoying the best that Barcelona has to offer its visitors.

Though the city's delights are hardly a secret, the Hollywood film director Woody Allen, has said that he intends to showcase Barcelona to the world.

The veteran film-maker recently arrived in the capital of Catalonia to begin shooting his as-yet unnamed movie, with its stars Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson and Javier Bardem also joining him.

Allen told a press conference that he wanted to portray Barcelona "the same way I presented Manhattan to the world through my eyes.

"I want to write a love letter to Barcelona and from Barcelona to the world," he added.

With movie-making just as much about hanging around waiting as it is acting, the stars could not be filming in a more ideal location and Scarlett Johansson has already been spotted making the most of her time in the city.

The actress has spent much of her free time on the city beach, just a brief stroll from the hustle and bustle of the city centre and surrounded by the bars and restaurants of the waterfront rejuvenated for the 1990 Olympic Games.

Barcelona is also the perfect city to enjoy by wandering around aimlessly, taking in the famous Las Ramblas thoroughfare with its street traders and entertainers as well as the winding alleyways of the Gothic quarter.

Given a bit more time, the movie-stars would be well advised to check out the works of the architect Gaudi, including the surreal Park Guell and his unfinished cathedral, both a short journey from the centre.
