Goldie and Kurt holiday in legendary Santorini

Whether you believe in the myth of Atlantis or not, Santorini's natural beauty cannot be doubted.

For centuries believed to be the location of the fabled lost city of Atlantis, the Greek island of Santorini is now perhaps better known for its crystal clear warm seas, friendly tavernas and stunning beaches.

For Hollywood golden couple Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, this perfect combination of history and natural beauty make the island the perfect location for a break-away from the pressures and noise of LA, with the pair having chartered a boat to explore the coastline.

The couple, who have now been married for 25 years, have been spotted messing about in the Aegean Sea and taking in the local hospitality of the island.

As they would no doubt testify, the volcanic island is the perfect place to do nothing but relax in the manner of the Minoan kings who made Santorini their home more than 2,000 years ago.

Many visitors simply cannot tear themselves away from the charms of the Fira, the picture-postcard capital with whitewashed walls and narrow passageways which offer welcome shade from the year-round sun.

Located on the top of a cliff, reached either by 600 steps or a cable car, the town also boasts a vibrant nightlife, though arguably the best entertainment comes with watching the sun set over the sea with a glass of locally-produced wine in your hand.

However, hiring a jeep and exploring the rest of the small island makes for a truly memorable and rewarding experience, with small villages giving way to volcanic craters or sites of archaeological significance.

Given that Santorini is the most active volcanic centre in the Aegean Volcanic Arc, it is maybe worth checking out this wonderful island now, as you never know when it may go the way of Atlantis.
