Former Beatle Paul McCartney opted for the bright lights of New York rather than Liverpool's famous docklands on his second date with actress Renee Zellweger recently.
Soon after the pair were spotted getting close at a concert in the US, they chose to spend an evening together enjoying a candlelit dinner at the American Hotel on the city's Sag Harbour, right at heart of the famous Hamptons.
The area of Long Island is long known as a summer playground for America's rich and famous and the 65-year old musician bought a summer home there years ago.
In addition to numerous luxury hotels and restaurants, the Hamptons offer the perfect break away from the constant buzz of New York City.
Easily reachable from downtown on the Long Island Rail Road, which offers stunning views of Manhattan's legendary skyline, the numerous beach-side villages and hamlets nestled between the towns of Southampton and East Hampton exude a timeless charm and a strong community spirit, with independent shops and cafes allowing the stressed-out traveller the chance to unwind for an afternoon.
Despite the world's most dynamic city being just over the water, for many the Hamptons are just too appealing, though while every third property seems to be a hotel or bed and breakfast, booking well in advance is essential for the summer months, unless you happen to count movie stars or politicians among your friends.
