Although one of the smallest islands of the Cyclades complex, Mykonos is definitely the most famous, thanks largely to its pulsating nightlife and an abundance of local colour.
Whilst the island is not short of natural beauty and is steeped in rich history, there's no doubt that the main reason people come is to pose and party into the small hours.
A dry, arid island, it covers an area of barely 90 square kilometres and is situated in the middle of the Aegean, about 94 miles from Piraeus port.
The island's landscape is a symphony of blazing bare rock, blinding white peasant architecture and numerous lacy stretches of sandy beaches.
Today it is estimated that the population amounts to 11,000 people, who have a reputation of being friendly and tolerant to the island's wild lifestyle.
Even if you're disenchanted by the nightclubbing scene, you won't help but be impressed by the port town of Hora - a charming mix of chic boutiques and whiter-than-white houses decked with bougainvillea and geraniums.
There's also a handful of decent museums, photographable churches and excursion boats running dive trips, meaning the island caters for all tastes - hedonistic or otherwise.
