Soak up a slice of paradise on the Turks and Caicos Islands
Mar 20, 2006, 16:18

More and more well-known celebrities seem to be drawn to the powdery white sands and aqua waters of the Caribbean islands. And is it any wonder?

With its sun-kissed beaches and spectacular crystal-clear waters, it's hardly surprising that action-man Bruce Willis chose the Turks and Caicos Islands as the location for his overseas home.

It's also easy to imagine why actors Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck accepted Willis' invitation to tie the knot at his enchanting private villa there last summer.

But for those of us who are unable to afford such a luxury, it is still possible to enjoy a slice of paradise, albeit only temporarily, on this little-known British colony.

Just north of Haiti, the Turks and Caicos Islands consist of eight main islands and numerous smaller uninhabited cays dotted amid tranquil waters.

Consistently in the world's top ten dive list, the waters also offer some of the best snorkelling and water sports in the area.

The islands are easy to reach by air and, once there, frequent flight connections are available for travel between the islands, usually for very affordable prices.

The majority of visitors head to Provo, which has most of the major hotels and restaurants and claims to have the world's only conch farm.

It is well worth making excursions to the other islands as well though, such as a boat trip around the Caicos Cays where there are some spectacular caves.

Protected by one of the world's longest coral reefs, the Turks and Caicos Islands are becoming an increasingly popular retreat and have rapidly become one of the classiest places to visit in the Caribbean.

What is more, 60 per cent of visitors head back to the islands over and over again - surely there can be no sounder endorsement for a holiday destination.
