Croatia has emerged as a surprise hit among tourists, according to a recent survey of European tour operators.
The survey, conducted by the European Tour Operators Association (ETOA), found that Croatia came out on top in terms of both excitement and value for money.
The country received 23 per cent of the votes for the most exciting country, followed by the Czech Republic with 15 per cent and Iceland, which received 13 per cent.
In terms of value for money, Croatia took joint first place with Spain, both countries receiving 19 per cent of the votes.
Tom Jenkins, executive director of ETOA, said: "Croatia comes out on top because it is perceived as European without suffering the pitfalls of EU membership.
"Because it is not subject to EU VAT laws, Croatia enjoys a 19 per cent price break compared with its close competitors, the more established Italy and Greece."
Paris was voted best holiday destination for romance, with a massive 71 per cent of votes, and France as a whole was rated for its family and outdoor activities as well as for its fine dining.
London took the top spot for sightseeing but the UK in general was voted the worst value for money destination in Europe.
