'Once-in-a-lifetime' trips become commonplace

A new survey has revealed that the dream holiday for the majority of British people would be to visit Australia or New Zealand.

Fifty-three per cent of respondents said that they would like to go "down-under" and Australia and New Zealand proved to be the favoured destination for all age groups except the over 65s.

Half of the respondents liked the idea of a round-the-world trip and the USA and Canada were also popular choices.

The survey also revealed that many people would now consider taking a dream trip as a regular holiday, with one in five claiming that they did not feel the need to wait for a special occasion to splash out on a so-called "once-in-a-lifetime" holiday.

Ian Larkin, a spokesman for Halifax, comments: "Cheaper airfares, competitive package prices and booking via the internet have all contributed to the opening up of long-haul travel and many people now consider taking a 'dream holiday' in an average year rather than waiting for a special occasion."

However, a quarter of those surveyed said that they would wait until they retired, while 12 per cent said they would probably go on a special trip once their children had left home.
