The A-list pair were in the Chinese city to continue the production of The Dark Knight, the next movie in the Batman series following the release of Batman Begins in 2005, Hello magazine reports.

International heartthrob Bale got a particularly warm reception as he offered a personal address to the crowd.

"I look forward to climbing to the top of your highest buildings and jumping off of them as Batman," the superstar said.

The actors and the film crew spent most of their time in Hong Kong's business district, filming scenes that will reportedly represent the first time that Batman has pursued his crime-fighting crusade outside the fictional Gotham City.

Hong Kong is one of the two special administrative regions in the People's Republic of China, the other being Macau, and is a leading financial and business centre.

It is also a must-see destination for travellers in the Far East, owing to its unique atmosphere and landmarks including the Tian Tan Buddha, the tallest outdoor Buddha statue in the world.
