Menorca Holiday Resort Guide

Menorca Holiday Resort Guide

The beautiful island of Menorca in the Mediterranean may lack the excitement and the buzz of its neighbours Majorca and Ibiza but it is a truly picturesque place with golden beaches, low rise holiday accommodation and picture perfect harbours. It is a popular holiday destination for families and those seeking a more tranquil holiday. There are more beaches on Menorca than Ibiza and Majorca put together all on an island approximately 30 miles by 10 miles, so it's very easy to explore and discover your own piece of Paradise. There are secluded coves with stunning beaches and azure seas just waiting to be found, follow that with a relaxed evening in a taverna watching the sunset, glass of wine in hand. Perfect- what more could you wish for from a holiday to Menorca?

Mahon is the old capital and steeped in history, there has been a city in this site since Roman times. Mahon is perched high up on the cliffs overlooking the quaint harbour. This pretty city is well worth exploring and the harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world, is a great place to wander around. It doesn't have a beach but is a wonderful place to stroll along the cobbled streets and watch the world go by from the plentiful cafes and restaurants.

Arenal D'en Castell Lying in the north of the island and surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside, this is a horseshoe shaped bay with soft golden sands perfect for small children. The resort is edged with holiday accommodation and restaurants serving local Spanish cuisine as well as the more familiar British food. This is a hilly resort and holiday makers with children may appreciate the mini train that goes past the main holiday accommodation. From here it is easy to take a local bus to explore Mahon and also the fishing village of Fornells. Accommodation is varied from self catering to 4 star, there are shops and restaurants to please every taste. This resort is only about 15 miles from the airport, so you will be on that beach before you know it!

Cala Galdana Another sweeping horseshoe bay with clean, safe, golden sands, this time approx 45 minutes from the airport. This resort claims to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the Western Mediterranean. It is backed by dramatic cliffs and pine trees that provide some shade from the midday sun and is popular with families and couples. Cala Galdana has a wide range of water sports available for the adventurous and perfect calm turquoise sea for those who prefer to paddle. The bay is surrounded with cafes and restaurants, night life is low key and mainly within the hotels. Accommodation ranges from the self catering apartments to the grander hotels, something for every budget.

Cala'n Bosch is one of the more lively resorts about an hour and a half transfer time from the airport. This resort is in the southwest of the island and has built up around a pretty marina. Cala'n Bosch feels a little more up market with its expensive yachts and harbour side cafes and yet the accommodation is not expensive. it is popular with families, especially those looking for a more active holiday. There are water sports, glass bottom boat trips, two small beaches with crystal clear waters, excellent bars and restaurants and lively bars. Accommodation for all pockets is available up to 5 stars.

Cala'n Forcat lies on the west coast of Menorca and blends easily into the next resort Cala'n Blanes. Cala'n Forcat is a relatively new resort which offers low key relaxed holidays on perfect golden beaches between the rocky outcrops .There are deep inlets between the headlands with picturesque coves perfect for relaxing with your family. It is a short drive to the old Moorish stronghold of Ciudadela, a pretty town with interesting architecture, traditional Menorcan restaurants, tapas bars and plenty of stylish shops. Cala'n Forcat has many self catering apartments and plenty of supermarkets, when cooking becomes too much effort, try eating out in the numerous restaurants and cafes. It takes about an hour to get here from the airport.

Santo Tomas is situated on the south coast of Menorca and features not one but two beaches. This is a wonderful laid back resort with the emphasis on relaxation. It is a perfect spot for family days on the beach with fine pale sands and clear azure water. There are activities for the more energetic such as mini golf, tennis and water sports but for many just a beach ball and the chance to paddle in the clear water are enough. The beach is backed by pine trees and beautiful countryside and there is a lovely promenade to wander along if you need a leg stretch. This attractive promenade is lined with cafés, bars and restaurants, just the places to sit a while with a cold drink. Accommodation ranges from self catering to luxury hotels.

Binibeca lies in the southeast of the island and was built in traditional Menorcan style. Sandy coves dot the coast line and are edged with white washed buildings that sparkle in the Menorcan sun and reflect the turquoise sea. There are plenty of watersports available and beautiful beaches to tempt inactivity. Nearby is Binibeca Vell ,easy to get to with the tourist train. Its cobbled streets and tempting shops and restaurants may encourage you to explore just a little. Accommodation is mainly in villas which range from budget to luxury.
