About Blue Mountains National Park
Ready to go walkabout?
The Blue Mountains offer a bush walker's utopia that's anything but the back o' beyond. In fact, it's just 38 miles outside Sydney.
Named for the blue-tinged mist that forms when sunlight hits oil droplets diffused by the abundant eucalyptus, this section of the Great Dividing Range once was considered an impenetrable barrier to westward exploration. Now it's a weekend and holiday haven for Sydneysiders in search of cooler climes.
A string of charming, flower-bedecked townships along the Great Western Highway provide all the requisite resort accoutrements: hotels, cafes, restaurants, art galleries, antique shops and the like. Mother Nature provides the thrills.
Miles of hiking trails guide the stouthearted through wooded valleys and mountain rainforests, past swift-running waterfalls and gnarly angophora trees, among crimson canyons and fern-carpeted gullies. Those not bothered by acrophobia can choose from rock climbing upward or rappelling downward - there's definitely no shortage of challenging precipices.
Most photographed among the promontories are the Three Sisters, easily viewed from Echo Point without benefit of mountaineering gear. According to an aboriginal dreamtime legend, the sandstone sisters were once a shaman's daughters, turned to stone to safeguard them from a marauding tribe. When their father died in the ensuing battle, the trio was forever destined to stand gazing out over Jamison Valley.
Not a bad fate given the view. But a shorter stay is highly recommended.
