Glass House Mountains Park Video Guide
About Glass House Mountains Park
What's in a name? The Glass House Mountains beg the question. Captain Cook was an intrepid explorer, but no poet. The 11 dramatic, volcanically formed peaks reminded him of smokestacks jutting from a glass factory back in his native Yorkshire, hence the handle.
The Kabi Aborigines, however, have woven a rich legend to explain the misshapen promontories: the tale of Tibrogargan, his expectant wife Beerwah and their nine children. When the advancing sea threatened the family home, the eldest son ran off, abandoning his pregnant mother. An outraged Tibrogargan gave the boy a powerful beating, leaving him permanently hunched. But the child, unaware of Beerwah's condition, defended his action, saying that his mother was the biggest and could look after herself. Disgusted, his father turned his back on the errant son forever. This vivid account of patriarchal authority is literally written in stone.
The monolithic fable stands in stark contrast to surrounding plains lush with tropical fruit and conifer plantations. Roadside stalls sell juicy mangos, avocado, papaya, passion fruit, pineapple and sun-ripened strawberries. So pack a picnic and pick your peak.
Experienced climbers will welcome the chance to challenge Beerwah, the mighty matriarch at 1,824 feet. Those with high anxiety can meander along the well-used trails that Ngungun offers. Shutterbugs should hightail it to nearby Mary Cairncross Park, the best vantage point from which to snap a group photograph of this dysfunctional, volcanic family.
By any name, a memorable odyssey.
