It's late in Guilin. The sky is black and barren. An old barefoot fisherman balances on his teetering raft, and cuts the water with a long bamboo pole. He pushes off the bottom of the shallow inlet, and guides himself down the Li River.
An old, oil lantern glows golden, haunting the quiescent ripples. A cormorant is tethered to the bow by a rope. Suddenly, it jumps into the water and swims alongside the raft. Then it is gone.
