Versailles Video Guide
About Versailles
Until royal heads rolled in 1793, Versailles was the seat of French power and politics, a hunting lodge transformed into a sprawling, gilded Baroque testament to excess.
Louis IV, the Sun King, moved his court here to avoid the intrigues and assassination plots of Paris. Here, queen, mistresses and a small house party of 1,000 noblemen (plus endless servants) cavorted far from the starving peasants, who wouldn't show up for another century.
