Ciudad de cantos, ciudad de santos ("City of stones, city of saints") goes the saying about Avila, a pristinely preserved medieval outpost some 3,700 feet above sea level in the windswept, castle-studded region of Castilla y Leon.
Surrounded by ochre plains and strange moonscape boulders (hence the "stones"), Avila is a shrine to its homegrown mystic and ecstatic visionary, St. Teresa (1515-1582). The story goes that she fled home at the tender age of 7 to martyr herself to the Moors, but was discovered by her uncle.
