Toledo is not a haven for atheists.
Packed with monasteries, churches, mosques, churches that used to be mosques, synagogues made into churches and one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Christendom (with primacy over all other churches in Spain), it is a place where the spiritual triumphs over the secular. Even the city's great art - El Greco's magnificent altarpieces and paintings - is grounded in religion.
It wasn't always so. When Philip II moved his imperial court to Madrid in 1561, the church chose to stay safely behind Toledo's crenellated walls.
