Bern Video Guide
About Bern
The burghers of Bern, Switzerland's capital, barely conceal their passion for members of the ursine species. Bears are everywhere. They decorate the canton's coat of arms, growl from the city's trash cans and reside "fur real" in a giant pit along the Aare River. Even the name Bern comes from the old German bero, meaning … bear.
In 1191, Berthold V, duke of Zahringen, established a military base on the border of German-speaking Alemanni and French-speaking Burgundy. To celebrate the founding of this outpost, he organized a hunting expedition (as one did in those days).
